Bay Area Black Independent Film Festival
The Bay Area Black Independent Film Festival started in 1997 as the Iconoclast Productions Black History Film Festival, a component to the African American Multimedia Conference that started a year earlier in 1996. Over the next four years, it would become increasingly evident that while the festival took place during Black History Month (initially, over the three day President’s Day Weekend) that the focus was not actually historical in nature, but that Independent Film was the aspect that distinguished the Iconoclast Film Festival from all others.
Now that Iconoclast Productions has expanded its activities to included Oakland, Berkeley, Vallejo, and other areas beyond San Francisco, the Bay Area Black Independent Film Festival the new name on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of Iconoclast Productions in 2013.
